Alfa Romeo racer Antonio Giovinazzi was in the race for the Belgian GP on his way to ninth place, then the Italian made an unnecessary mistake in the final lap and ended the race in a guardrail.
Giovinazzi received some harsh criticism when he wasted the opportunity. Particularly relentless was former racer and journalist Christian Danner, who told Blick of Switzerland:
“Giovinazzi is an idiot.”
The owner of the Pascal Picci team was not impressed with the Italian racing either:
Alfa Romeo team boss Frederic Vasseur added:
“I don't know what to say except that this mistake was completely unnecessary.”
In Formula One caravan, meanwhile, rumors have emerged that Giovinazzi would have one last chance to prove himself at his home race in Monza, and in the event of a new bad performance, he could already be replaced in Singapore by backup racer Marcus Ericsson.
