Mercedes boss in F1 Toto Wolff has admitted after the new qualifying defeat of the silver arrow team that Mercedes is currently unable to beat Ferrari, which is simply too fast on the straights.
After Mercedes started off this season more than excellent, Ferrari took over the primacy after the summer break and the current team of champions found themselves in a subordinate position.
Although Lewis Hamilton was able to qualify for the first starting line-up in Sochi, the British failed to threaten the extraordinary Charles Leclerc, who won his fourth consecutive best starting position.
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff said after qualifications:
“I would like to congratulate Lewis, who has taken a truly fantastic lap to make into front row. There was no more that could be done, as Ferrari was simply too fast at the moment. Eight tenths have been gained on the straights alone, and nothing can be done about it. We have achieved remarkable results in recent years, but now we are facing a new challenge that we will gladly accept. “
