Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff admitted after Friday's free trainings before the race for the GP of Mexico that the silver arrow team at the Rodriguez brothers' race wasn't fast enough to fight for the summit.
Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton finished 4th and 5th in second free training, respectively, and Mercedes lost half a second compared to Ferrari in the first sector alone.
After the end of the first racing day, Toto Wolff acknowledged that Mercedes was lagging behind the competition in Mexico.
“We knew we were going to have problems on this track. We had problems with tire wear last year, and obviously this year will be similar. We simply aren't fast enough to fight for the top, while the Ferrari is extremely powerful. In particular, we are waiting for a fight for survival in which we will try to keep our tires as long as possible. We primarily want to limit the damage. “
