Lewis Hamilton [Mercedes] was the fastest in the second free training before the US GP race at the Austin race track. The Briton was faster than Charles Leclerc [Ferrari] by a good three tenths of a second, with Max Verstappen [Red Bull] taking third place.

Lewis Hamilton made the most of his advantage when he caught a whiff of Robert Kubica's Williams in the longest plane, where he gained about three tenths of a second. The British lead over Charles Leclerc was just as much in the end, with Max Verstappen behind by a few thousandths of a second.

For a good ten minutes after the start, Romain Grosjean lost control of his car's rear in the 5th turn and collapsed violently into the guardrail after turning. Training was interrupted by a red flag and the Frenchman badly damaged his race car and ended his training early.
