Valtteri Bottas [Mercedes] was the fastest in the first free training session before the race for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina. The Finnish was half a second faster than Max Verstappen [Red Bull], with Lewis Hamilton in second Mercedes in third place.
Bottas is launching a brand new powertrain in Abu Dhabi, which means the Finn will start Sunday's race from the start of the race. The first free training session ended with a red flag, as Sebastian Vettel collapsed into the guardrail just before the time was up.
Alexander Albon [Red Bull], followed by Vettel with Ferrari, came in for the best three. Just before the end of training, the German lost control of his car from colliding with his Ferrari in a protective fence.
Abu Dhabi: Bottas will start from the back row
Romain Grosjean [Haas] placed sixth during his first free training and Charles Leclerc [Ferrari] took seventh place.
Kevin Magnussen [Haas] came in eighth place, with Antonio Giovinazzi [Alfa Romeo] and Nico Hulkenberg [Renault] top ten.
