Valtteri Bottas announced before the start of the last race weekend this season on social media that his marriage to wife Emilio is over.
Bottas' companion has been Finnish swimmer Emilia Pikkarainen for more than a decade, whom he also married in Helsinki in August 2016. Together they enjoyed a peaceful life, hidden from the headlights of the public.
Before the race weekend in Abu Dhabi, Bottas wrote on Instagram:
“I am sorry to inform you that the marriage between Emilia and me has ended. We have parted ways because of the challenges of my career, because we think this is best for us and our loved ones, so we separate as a friend. I will always be grateful to her for all the sacrifices she has made for me, for her support over the years, and for all the experiences we have experienced together. I trust that you will respect both us and our privacy regarding this matter. That will be all I want to say and comment on regarding our divorce. “
