Andrea Stella, longtime racing engineer for Fernando Alons, offered an interesting comparison between Alons and Michael Schumacher in an interview with the BBC.
Stella, who spent most of his Formula One career at Ferrari, had the opportunity to get to know the two stars of world motorsport.
“They are both exceptional racers and difficult to compare. I could say that Fernando is very good in all areas, but he may not be the best anywhere. Michael, on the other hand, was often the absolute best in the individual racing segment, with Fernando more versatile. They also differ in the approach to racing itself. Michael raced very offensively and was often over the limit, while Fernando kept up his pace. To illustrate this with an example, I could say that Michael was already racing at the limit, and the problem came up when he wanted to find that extra percentage in qualifying. It was often necessary to calm him down a bit. Perhaps Fernando understands his boundaries a little better and, as a result, can prepare his car very well for the race. “
