Berlin, Germany – For the first time in the 20 -year history of the Laureus World Sport Awards, the prestigious prize for the Laureus Sportsman of the twelve months was awarded to two sports greats: Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 driver Lewis Hamilton and footballer Lionel Messi. Both athletes received the same number of jury votes, which is why both were honored with the prestigious award.
The award was given for their achievements in the year 2019 in which Lewis won the Formula 1 Drivers' Championship for the sixth time and Lionel was voted World Player of the Year (The Handiest FIFA Males's Participant). Both athletes played an important role in the success of their respective teams. The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team won for the sixth time in the season 2019 in a row the constructors' world championship, FC Barcelona became Spanish champion and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Other nominees included runner Eliud Kipchoge, the first athlete to finish a marathon under two hours total, six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, golfer Tiger Woods, who last year completed his 82. PGA Tour win, and tennis player Rafael Nadal, who 2019 got his 19. Enormous slam won.
“Wow, it's an insane honor,” said Lewis after the award ceremony. “I grew up in a sport that made sense of my life, and I'm extremely grateful for that. But I also grew up in a sport that has very little to no diversity. We see United States on this topic of America and I believe that it is our responsibility to use our platform to fight for equality and inclusiveness and to ensure that we are committed to united states of america and try to represent the state of the world today.
“I would like to express a huge thank you to Mercedes-Benz. They have always supported me enormously. They signed me on when I was just 13 years young. I am still very grateful to you for that today. – year Giving boys the opportunity to live their dream. Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team nominated for World Team of the twelve months
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team was one of six teams nominated for the World Team of the twelve months Award. It was the sixth nomination for the Mercedes factory team, the 2018 with the Award was awarded.
In addition to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, five other legendary teams were among the nominees: Liverpool FC, the Toronto Raptors, the US women's soccer team, the Spanish national basketball team for men and the South African rugby union team, which was awarded last night Best Team Award.
