(Motorsport-Complete.com) – For Carlos Sainz, the In fact Handy Prix of Belgium ended on Sunday before it had even started. A technical defect on the starting grid made it impossible for the McLaren driver to take part in the Formula 1 race in Spa.

The team had an exhaust defect

caused by a nut with the drive , diagnosed. In order to clarify the exact cause, McLaren is waiting for an analysis from engine partner Renault. Only then do you know whether the unit can be saved or whether Sainz in Monza needs a new one.

“In this specific tumble, we have to wait for the analysis by the manufacturer Renault,” confirms McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl. He explains: “In the end we saw that it was an internal nut on the drive side, which then subsequently damaged the rear of the car and the exhaust.”

“That is of course disappointing for Carlos, for us, because we couldn’t even start the race”, he knows German. “But it is what it is. We have to wait for the analysis, also with regard to the consequences – whether there is a chance of getting the energy unit going again or whether it is a total write-off.”

With only one driver in the field, McLaren scored six points at Spa. Lando Norris, who started from ten place, finished seventh. McLaren holds third place in the constructors’ championship, but is only two points ahead of Racing Point.
