(Motorsport-Total.com) – “Who could have expected that?”, Beams Nico Hülkenberg after his surprising eighth place in the Formula 1 race at the Nürburgring ( Formula 1 2020 are residing in the ticker ). Yesterday the German had to go into the qualification without preparation and was the last to have a chance, but today he worked his way up from this last place and was named driver of the day for it.

Nico Hülkenberg received applause from the mechanics for his performance Zoom Gather

“It’s crazy”, says Hülkenberg, who was a little more than 24 hours in the car for the first time. Yesterday morning he was still prepared to sit in front of the TV microphone for RTL, but today he leaves the Eifel with four points and a strong performance.

To the top 10 hardly anyone thought after yesterday’s Saturday. “It was difficult to expect anything. I actually just drove and adapted,” says Hülkenberg. At the start, the racing level pilot actually just wanted to stay out of the rough, but quickly found himself in place 17 again.

“It took a while to find a good rhythm. Of course it was clear that the learning curve during the race would be extreme,” he says. Towards the middle of the first stint, it suddenly “clicked” and Hulkenberg felt more comfortable in the car. “Then came the race and a good rhythm,” he says.

That allowed him to extend the first stint to refined tires. Only after 29 laps did Hulkenberg come to the Field – only Pierre Gasly on Medium drove a lap longer. “The conflict was important for the result in the end. It just took the pressure off the second stint,” he says.

“After that I concentrated on myself and tried to turn every lap for To be in the corner at my personal restriction and to feel my way with the car. I think I managed that quite well, “continued Hülkenberg, who noticed the physical effort in the second half of the race but was able to bring the race home.

The salary conflicted eighth place and four points in the championship. But it should be more important to him that he was able to prove his skills again. “At the moment I’m just proud of myself for having mastered it that way,” he says. “From last to eighth place – I think that can be seen.”

The German is still speculating on a cockpit for 2021. And he knows that with the race he could advertise himself again. “But now I need a few days to process all of that. For the moment, I’m happy and grateful for the opportunity to drive the race and end it like this.” His conclusion: “Crazy. Crazy Yarn.”
