After finishing third in the race in Imola, Daniel Ricciardo did not forget his traditional “shoey”, and this time the winner Lewis Hamilton also drank champagne from the Australian’s shoe. Both Hamilton and Ricciardo took off their masks and “toasted” with the Australian’s shoe.

Although it was an extremely sympathetic gesture, both drivers were soon accused of committing an “evident” violation of the strict safety protocols introduced by Formula 1 and the FIA during the covid-19 pandemic.

The FIA’s safety guidelines provide for the social distance between people who are not in a common bubble, and before the race in Austria, the FIA issued a warning to Sebastian Vettel, who spoke to Red Bull members Christian Horner and Helmut Marko without wearing a mask.

Ricciardo and Hamilton did the same on the podium and immediately earning some criticism on social media. Dissatisfaction with such actions has meanwhile been expressed by members of some competing teams, while the FIA has not yet commented on the matter.
