f1-technology-2020:-the-question-of-downforce-at-the-sachir-enormous-prix

(Motorsport-Total.com) – Although the Sachir Grand Prix was by no means the first time in the Formula 1 season 2020 that two races took place at the same venue on two consecutive weekends. However, it was the first time that the same route was driven on two completely different configurations.

The external course of the Bahrain World Circuit put the Formula 1 groups in front of a whole range of challenges. Because the inner part of the course was omitted, there were fewer fast corners, but more straights.

This had a significant influence on the aerodynamic philosophies of the individual groups. The high-speed sectors 1 and 3 had to be reconciled with the second sector, which requires a lot of downforce. It is characterized by heavy bumps and the difficult chicane.

A clear answer to whether you can concentrate on the straight line or should take some downforce for the middle sector, there was no. During the free practice sessions, the groups tried out different configurations. The aim was not only to meet the challenges of each individual sector, but also to consider the effects on the tires.

spoon vs. Beer counter

How tricky it was to find the right level of downforce is illustrated by the example of Racing Point. First of all, the later winning team tried a spoon-shaped wing on Friday (see article picture above). This battle last at 70. Anniversary Enormous Prix in Silverstone was used.

The deeper, central blade produces more downforce. The wing is retracted on the outside, which means that less turbulence occurs. This also reduces air resistance.

After other groups checked low-downforce configurations on Friday, the future Aston Martin works team experimented with its own solution for low downforce in the third free coaching session, the “beer counter “Configuration from Monza. After a few comparative tests, however, the “spoon solution” proved to be more promising and the group of workers switched back to this wing for qualifying and the race.

Racing Point combined this wing with the new endplate assembly, that made the Group of workers debut at the Turkey Enormous Prix (old solution in a circle). The assemblage is similar to the inspiration of the vehicle, the 1000 er-Mercedes.

Racing Point battle by far not the only group of workers experimenting with downforce levels. The photo gallery shows how most midfield teams compared Build-United States of America with low and medium downforce. Some groups also tested different configurations for the cooling of their cars with regard to 2020.
