Max Verstappen is getting a new teammate for 2021 season and it’s no secret that Red Bull expect the new addition, in the form of a 30-year-old Mexican, to do what others before him could not: catch Max Verstappen.

For the first time since Mark Webber, the team from Milton Keynes chose to look outside their own pool of racing talents and, in a sensational move, hired Sergio Perez’s services for next year. It’s no doubt that 2021 will be “make or break” season for the Mexican, as the main question occurs: How close can/must he get to Verstappen?

Advisor to the team Helmut Marko supposes there should be a maximum of two tenths between the pair: “Because as a team we need to be able to attack Mercedes with two drivers.” he told Motorsport-Total.com. “Perez should be within shooting distance of Max in the race and we’ll see in qualifying. Nobody has been able to reach Max’s level there yet.”

However, once the Formula 1 circus gets going, the heads will quickly turn to 2022. Perez will be desperate to show some solid pace right from the outset to convince his new employer that the decision made has been the right one and possibly to secure an extension for another season.
