The 2018/19 FIA World Endurance Championship was successful for French driver Kevin Estre and his Danish teammate Michael Christensen.  Racing the Porsche 911 RSR the Franco-Danish pairing took seven podiums from the eight races in the Super Season, including two wins at Fuji Speedway and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2018.

The only non podium finish was at Sebring, where they finished 5thafter starting from pole position in the 8 Hour race.

The impressive tally of results meant that Kevin Estre and Michael Christensen became the new FIA World Endurance GT Driver Champions, succeeding Ferrari’s Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado.  It also meant that Porsche claimed the FIA World Endurance GT Manufacturer’s Championship to add to the LMP1 world titles won in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

We caught up with Kevin Estre at the start of the new FIA WEC season at The Prologue in Barcelona.

“I am looking forward to the new season.  I love the fact we are going to Brazil because I’ve never been.  The track looks cool and I remember watching Senna driving there, so it is a good memory and I look forward to racing there.  Bahrain is a very good atmosphere and we will have the party there as well. The rest of the season are on tracks that we know very well and like, like Spa, Silverstone, Sebring and Le Mans.  Let’s see what the weather brings in Fuji and Shanghai, but they are great events as well.”

“I don’t think being world champion puts us under any pressure this season.  The pressure was there last year to finish the job.  We were leading pretty much since the beginning of the season with quite a comfortable lead, therefore it was tough to hold the performance.  This year we have nothing to prove, we proved it last year, but we will work hard to continue on the same level and to try and win it again.

“There are a lot of changes in the new car. It looks similar to last year’s car, it’s still a 911, but quite a lot of changes and I’m really looking forward to doing the first race with it.  We’ve tested quite a lot but now I want to drive it with others and see where our strengths lie.”

Round 1 of the 2019/20 FIA World Endurance Championship is the 4 Hours of Silverstone on Sunday 1 September.
