After the Haas team officially confirmed that Romain Grosjean will continue to be a US team racer next year, Nico Hulkenberg is left with only a fight for a seat with Alfi Romeo, who has not yet confirmed his race for next season.
Nico Hulkenberg was after Renault decided to replace him in the offseason 2020 Esteban Okonom is a candidate for the Haas seat, but team boss Guenther Steiner eventually decides that Haas will continue with the same race.
This leaves the German with only a seat on the Alfa Romeo team, which has not yet confirmed that Antonio Giovinazzi will be a teammate of Kimmy Raikkonen next season. An acquaintance with Alpha boss Fred Vasseur could also play in Hulkenberg's favor, for which the German was racing with the GP2 and GP3 series, but Ferrari had already hinted that they wanted Giovinazzi to stay with Alfa next season. Alfa Romeo and Ferrari have a partnership, which gives the Maranell team one race seat for a member of their racing academy in exchange for a discount on the powertrain supply.
Following the collapse of negotiations with Haas, Hulkenberg has already expressed interest in a seat at Alpha, but at the same time acknowledged that the decision was not in his hands. Alpha would need Ferrari's blessing to replace Giovinazi, which in the current circumstances is unlikely. The story is set to unfold in the coming weeks, but it may well be that Nico Hulkenberg will have to say goodbye to Formula One after the end of the season 2019 1.
