Because of Zandvoort steep curve: Pirelli has new prototypes tested in Barcelona

As has now become known, the supplier will provide the Formula 1 teams with special prototypes in the second Barcelona test week. These tires could be used at the premiere on the converted race track in Zandvoort.

The Italian manufacturer has known given that the data of the converted race track is still being analyzed. Especially the steep curve before the starting up goal caught Pirelli's attention. Therefore, the manufacturer has developed a new tire, should the 2019 he / 20 er models are not sufficient for the planned load.

These are only new front tires. The teams will test the C2 blend in Spain next week. If the decision is made on the prototype, the design will be extended to all three tire compounds for the Zandvoort weekend.

The teams were informed about the Pirelli plans on Friday. Mario Isola, Pirelli Formula 1 boss, confirms: “I will tell the teams that we will test prototype front tires in the next session. These prototypes were built with a slightly different design.”

Pirelli had already evaluated data on the slope in Zandvoort. “Our thought is to drive the prototype tires there with a little higher pressure.” Since Pirelli has not yet gathered all the information, for example on the asphalt texture, the manufacturer wants to have another construction tested in Spain.

“The tires work a little differently, they are more resistant,” explains Isola. However, he also emphasizes that the production of the new tires is not a “panic” reaction. That was decided with the FIA. “It's part of a serious, professional process,” said the Italian.

After all, the tire supplier wants to be prepared just in case. “It may also be that we are driving with normal tires, with the appropriate instructions.” Pirelli also wanted to test the driveability of the other construction.

“The regulations state that we can test an additional prototype during a race weekend, two sets of educated cars,” explains Isola. Two sets of tires from the prototypes will therefore be used in educated cars.

Formula 1 sports director Ross Brawn last said no concerns about the steep curves in Zandvoort. It reminds of Indianapolis 2005 when only six cars could start due to Michelin tire damage. However, he is confident that this will not be repeated in the Netherlands 2020.
