Longtime McLaren boss Ron Dennis has revealed that Fernando Alonso has responded with sarcastic smile to the news, that his team-mate for the 2007 F1 season will be Lewis Hamilton.
Hamilton immediately drew attention to himself behind the wheel of McLaren in his debut season, and the Briton also seriously challenged his renowned teammate, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso.
Former McLaren manager Ron Dennis revealed that the Spaniard was not the most enthusiastic about sharing the garage with the newcomer while expressing doubt that McLaren could compete with Hamilton on an equal terms in the constructors ’championship.
“I went to Fernando and said to him, ‘Fernando, by the way, I’ve decided to put Lewis in the car.’
He thought for a while and said, “Don’t you want to win the constructors’ championship? ”
“He didn’t think Lewis would threaten him or score a lot of points, he even made fun of my decision. I still laugh today when I think about how wrong he was. ”
