Special advisor to Red Bull Helmut Marko has confirmed that the team has reached an agreement with Honda to use its engines beyond 2021. Japanese supplier has announced that they’ll be leaving the sport at the end of the 2021 season.

However, there’s one more obstacle that Milton Keynes outfit needs to clear – development stop is required to finalize the deal. The Austrian formation does not have the knowledge, personnel or resources that could develop the engine further until 2025 or 2026. A development stop is necessary from Red Bull’s perspective.

Marko told Auto, Motor und Sport that the FIA is to provide clarity next week. Also, all the other manufacturers will have to agree to the plan as well and that is quite a task: “It is a very clear common sense decision for Formula. Everything is settled between us. But there is no agreement until we have written proof from the FIA that the development stop on the engine side will be there,” concluded Marko.
