Very common in motorsport too, especially in the US. On many occasions, NASCAR fans have stood and applauded in honor of Dale Earnhardt and the same happened this year on lap 11 to honor JD Gibbs. Usually commentary stops as well and you get a silent lap. Example.

And if I remember corrently, Mexico did it as well during the F1 race, after the terrible earthquake.
