Fuck. This accident is fucking horrible.

level 2

This is terrible.

I was most worried once they released info saying that he was awake and aware of the accident and what transpired- my heart broke for him knowing that Hubert died.

And now he’s fighting for his own life.

ECMO is bad news. I’d hoped he’d have a better than 50/50 chance at recovery, but it sounds like those are his odds now, sadly.

level 2

Given the fact he’s likely on ECMO due to his ARDS being so severe it’s worrying both for the short term and, if he makes it, his long term quality of life. At least he received world class care so far, not many ECMO centres around the world I’m sure.

Absolutely tragic and heart breaking stuff for a 20 year old.

With the impact reaching upwards of 70 Gs, I was surprised his injuries were just broken legs and minor spinal injury.

With that level of force, many blood vessels would rupture all over his body.

The fact the pulmonary contusion evolved into ARDS is very unfortunate. At this point, I don’t think he will avoid severe neurocognitive impairment.

What a tragedy.

level 1

Oh Christ. I didn’t think it was this bad. Stay strong, Juan Manuel.

I’m starting to feel like his injuries were / are much worse than what was originally reported. Such a shame for him. My first thoughts were, I hope he can race again. Now I just hope he lives….

I’m not a doctor but I have several good friends who are, including one who frequently works at the medical center at COTA, and was familiar with the accident. He prefaced this conversation saying he has not examined the JMC. He told me that the respiratory failure is extremely serious for a person with in spinal injury, due to several factors. First, he is most likely not mobile and is in a position that limits movement, meaning the fluid in his lungs is collecting. The fact that they moved him to a different hospital speaks for the severity of the issue, he probably was not going to make it unless he had access to the advanced life support system he needed. Moving a patient who is still in ICU is a monumental risk. His lungs were most likely severely damaged in the accident as a result of the rapid de acceleration he experienced when he collided. He stated that JMC is in a serious condition and his quality of life is at risk, perhaps worse. This is very bad.

can you explain what lung injuries you would receive from rapid deceleration?

My wife runs ECMO machines. You are on the freaking edge if you are on one of those.

The statement was apparently made by his parents and posted on his Instagram account a couple hours ago. That’s how I saw it at least

level 2

I assume the F2 announcement was meant to come out after this one and someone fucked up.

level 2

The family released a statement.

level 1

Horrible news. Keep fighting Juan!

level 1

I’m quite nervous now. Get well soon, Correa.

level 1

“We are confident that our son will surprise us like he always does with his tremendous fighting will and strength and will recover completely.”

As a former icu RN this language from the family is the most indicative that he is probably not doing great and sadly will have a poor outcome. I’ve heard those words so many times. Just awful when it’s cases like these that are young people with bright futures.

level 1

Man now he’s fighting for his life. Not good. Hope he’ll be good.
