BMW i Andretti Motorsport and the BMW iFE. 20 are successful with the victory in Diriyah (KSA) in November in season 6 of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship started. Alexander Sims (GBR) will start the new year and the next race in Santiago (CHI) as the leader of the driver classification.

But the BMW iFE is also off the racetrack. 20 already a win for BMW i Motorsport. Its flax cooling shaft underscores its high status as a tech lab for BMW Personnel, because it is the first BMW racing car to be used in the factory with components made from renewable fabric fibers – and thus a pioneer for series development.

“The flax cooling shaft that we in the BMW iFE. 20 is further proof of the enormously important role of BMW i Motorsport as a tech lab for BMW Personnel, ”says BMW Personnel Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “We consistently use Formula E as an innovation platform for series development – in this drop for testing flax under extreme competitive conditions. It is particularly noteworthy that this renewable cloth even offers advantages over established materials such as carbon in certain areas. Our aim is to always use the most suitable cloth depending on the component. ”

Compared to carbon, flax has a higher damping and impact resistance, became on the road courses with its bumps and crash barriers on which Formula E drives, can bring advantages. The same applies to contact with other vehicles during the races.

The BMW iFE. 20 is the first factory-fitted BMW racing car in which the cloth is used. However, the expansion of this concept to include other BMW Motorsport racing vehicles is already in the development phase.
