Last weekend, the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E crew successfully launched their debut season in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in Chile citadel. After two podium finishes on the opening weekend in Saudi Arabia, the two drivers Nyck de Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne drove at the Antofagasta Minerals Santiago E-Prix 2020 both in the top 6.

Nyck started from eighth on the grid in one of the hottest races of the season. The Dutchman improved by five in the course of the 40 Positions and crossed the finish line in third place after an exciting build. As a result of a subsequent time penalty, he fell back to fifth place. The reason for this was a violation of the battery temperature. Nevertheless, the rookie achieved the best result so far in his young Formula E career.

His team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne took sixth place right behind Nyck. For Stoffel it was the third point arrival in the third race of the season after two third places in Diriyah.

Nyck and Stoffel both qualified for the fifth row on the grid. After the unexpectedly successful debut of the group in Saudi Arabia, they had to compete in qualifying groups one and two, in which the track conditions were challenging. With places one and two in their respective groups, Stoffel and Nyck narrowly missed the entry into the Huge pole of the top six drivers.

For the third time in a row there was additional performance for both drivers via the fan boost (VAN: 18, 6% / DEV: 7.7%). Stoffel even did a hat trick in fan vote casting: after the first two races of the season in Diriyah, the Belgian also triumphed in fans' favor in Santiago.

After three of 14 Seasonal race leads Stoffel (38 points) the driver classification with three points ahead of Alexander Sims (35 Points). Nyck is with 18 points in eleventh place overall. In the team ranking, the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Crew (56 Points) with four points behind BMW i Andretti Motorsport (60 Points) the second place.

From Chile we continue to Mexico City. There the crew contests on 15. February at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez the fourth E-Prix in its debut season in Formula E.

Ian James, Team Principal: “I'm happy with fifth and sixth place, which are exactly within our objectives. We are still on the right track with United States of America as a crew and I am glad that we were able to continue the once we started in Riyadh. Fortunately, this is also reflected in the current team ranking. We undoubtedly made a mistake in cooling Nyck's battery. That has undermined his excellent driving performance today. We have to work on that in the future. Stoffel has also shown a decent efficiency and I am proud that he is now leading the driver classification. The crew did very well under the extreme conditions that prevailed here today. We were able to collect a lot of information and will work on improving united states of america when we return. ”

Nyck de Vries: “I finished third and was classified fifth, but overall it was a good race. I didn't have a perfect initiate on the inside, but I was able to limit the damage. After that, I managed to stay calm and take advantage of some of the other drivers' mistakes in the early stages of the race. My lope was good and I was able to fight my way through the field. Unfortunately I received a penalty, which is a shame. But overall it was a good race. All in all, qualifying was okay. Of course there is always room for improvement here and there, but overall it was positive. ”

Stoffel Vandoorne: “It was a tough, very eventful race for me. My car was touched from all sides and did not drive 100% straight afterwards. So it was very difficult to carry it to the finish. But I am glad that I succeeded because there were many incidents today and it is important for us to take a good score again. This is what matters in this championship. Qualifying went well for united states of americagut, although united states of americader failed to jump to the Huge pole. Realistically, we had expected a little from the start. It is important that I was the fastest in my qualifying group with a good lead and that we were out of the top 10 could start. Maybe we left a few points today, but now we have to look ahead and do better in the next race. ”
